Concert Goers Page

Well last night was another successful night of rocking from local veterans Vendetta Red (Gallery Here). But one thing that I’ve become accustomed to is meeting new people at the shows in addition to seeing some of my friends. Sometimes they ask that I take their picture, sometimes not. Well I decided that I should probably share these on here as well. They’re just fun pictures and people probably want to see them. Right now there’s only some from last night and one from a birthday party I shot a few weeks ago. More will steadily stream in as I find old ones/take more new ones.

You can find the gallery HERE

Hope everyone had a lovely St. Patrick’s day. I know I did.

A Quick Q&A with Zach Davidson of Vendetta Red (Language Warning)

Zach Davidson of Vendetta Red backstage at El Corazon

So after months and months of the two of us putting it off for some reason (I got a new job, Zach had another kid, we’re lazy sometimes) I finally was able to get Zach Davidson of Vendetta Red on the phone for a quick Q&A Session about the return of Vendetta Red and the new album! Here’s the transcript from the phone call (I’ve put the questions in Bold so you know where they start):

Curtis: I don’t have a ton of questions, but first off – What’s changed in the last few years that made you guys want to go back to Vendetta Red?

Zach: I was writing a lot of songs that were more like Vendetta Red than they were like Sirens Sister. And then some kids had started a rumor that Vendetta Red was back together and playing a show. Somebody texted Leif one time and was like “Dude, where’s the secret show?” and Leif’s like “We’re not playing a show” and they go “Yeah, you are!” so we said “Well no, but that’s not a bad idea”. On top of that, jammin’ with these guys is pretty fun. It just felt right, you know? It felt like more people kind of “got” the music these days, unlike 6 years ago. More people gave a shit now. That’s something that happens to band when you’re out fucking beatin’ the street, working your ass off – people could give two fucks. Then you kill the band and people start saying “Oh, that was good. I wish they were a band again”. So then you go play a place, that you played like a hundred times when you’re really going for it and no one cares, you go back there after a couple of years and it’s packed.

C: Okay, now kind of on a personal level, since [Vendetta Red] broke up and you went to Sirens Sister and now coming back, You’ve since gotten married and had a couple of kids. How’s having a family affecting the career?

Z: Having a family is essential. I’ve always wanted a family, but I didn’t really know how much I wanted it or what to do to acquire a family because it’s something that I never had growing up. I always wanted to do music, so I think having a family allows you to be the kind of person you’re supposed to be. It’s a kind of a support system, like a foundation for you to grow around. It’s just wonderful to have a support system around that love me, and people that I love and am responsible for. It takes you out of yourself a little bit and you focus on other human beings and what they need to survive instead of focusing all on yourself.

C: Right on. So on another note – Did you think, when you were preparing for the reunion show in March, almost a year ago now, that you would be back in the studio doing another album?

Z: Umm, yeah. I kinda had an inkling. Getting to play with Jonah, Burke, and Leif is like… You have so much creative energy going on that you can’t help but just bang out eleven amazing songs, really. So yeah, I kinda did.

C: Well that’s good for us! Now what’s the major inspiration, or kind of drive, behind this album?

Z: Well there’s like a reoccurring theme about the birth of this evil God that’s created from selfishness and random acts of depravity. All of that negative energy just coalesces in another dimension and just bursts. So there’s that, but it’s not necessarily a concept record this time, it’s just kind of a reoccurring theme and subject matter. There’s that and then there’s like the typical Vendetta Red semi-political, semi-personal and always a bit ambient and poetic kind of lyrics. But it’s really fun! This record has a lot of beautiful exuberance and when you listen to it – Terry Date made it sound like our band. It just sounds like we’re having a fucking blast. So, I think that the theme behind this album is “WOO-HOO!”

C: Well actually my next question was gonna be along the line of “Sisters” [of the Red Death] in terms of a concept album, but you already answered that. But I did notice in the songs that I have heard, both when I heard the new music at Bumbershoot and when I heard the new single “Blank Screens, Etc.” that I also noticed a kind of Hollywood depravity theme to it as well.

Z: Oh yeah! Lyrically speaking for “Blank Screens, Etc.” it’s me being fucking fed up with the vapid, shallow fucking garbage. So I’m calling out how we fucking glamorize and exult these fucking shallow celebrities. When I hear about “Miss Thing”’s, you know, $7 million divorce while people are fucking starving. I hear about “Miss Thing”’s $13 million wedding ring and I’m sitting here like “WHY IS THIS PERSON FAMOUS? What good is she doing for the planet?” And it just makes me sick to my stomach.

C: I noticed that with, what was the other song? There was something about the Hollywood tours.

Z: Oh yeah! “Fuck Me on Star Tours”! Yeah that’s kind of a double entendre if you will. So “Fuck Me on Star Tours”, you know you go to Hollywood and you pay to get like the “Star Tour” and you can see where fucking Dipshit McGee lives and there also used to be a ride at Disneyland called “Star Tours” and so the joke is “You can either hold my hand on the ferris wheel, or you can fuck me on Star Tours”.

C: So what’s the name going to be for this album?

Z: Well right now we’re stuck on two. It could be “Lightyear Anniversary” or it could be “Scriptures”. We still have a couple of weeks to figure it out, but I’ll let you know.

C: So how is bringing Jonah* in to the mix? Kind of changing things up a bit?

Z: It’s great having Jonah around because he has zero tolerance for self-indulgence. So he’s just like “No! Is this part rocking me? You might be rocking out playing this part, but this part isn’t necessarily rocking me”. So it’s great to having him around. Musically he’s just fantastic, he has great instinct, his chord choices are fantastic. He has a lot of experience playing in killer bands with killer musicians. Shit dude, you kind of wanna impress him. Playing with our rhythm section, you kind of want to impress those two guys [Jonah & Burke]. You have to be good.

C: Understandably so. So what was it like working with an established producer like Terry Date**?

Z: Oh dude, it was fantastic. I have wanted to make a good record with Terry Date forever. I own probably 20 albums that he made. Out of my top ten records, he’s probably made at least three and that’s fucking saying a lot. He’s everything you want in a guy who’s able to tell you do a better job and not make you feel like a piece of shit. A guy with great instincts for how to really bring the best sound out of your voice. It’s been really a fantastic experience. We became really good friends and I would like to make another record with him.

C: Yeah, I met him at the Halloween show. He was a great guy, I liked him a lot. So do you happen to have a favorite song on the new album yet?

Z: Yeah, I think that my favorite song is called “Aurora Dive Team”. Burke wrote this riff that, to me, it sounds like Pixies on speed. So that’s right up my alley if you wanna make me stoked about anything. It just really worked out for vocals, and me and Jonah kind of share vocals on it. It’s a really fun song, but we haven’t played it live yet so you’re in for a really fun song.

C: Is there a date for releasing the album, and who is it going to be through?

Z: It’s probably going to come out in spring or early… you know if it comes out in summer time we’ll be ahead of schedule. That would be early for a typical record release. We’re trying to find a decent record label and put it out through them, but we won’t wait too long. We may just put it out ourselves and sell it online.

C: Yeah, I noticed that the single seemed to be doing pretty well.

Z: Yeah, I’m just stoked people like it. I mean, it sounds like Vendetta Red so I’m happy.

C: Well I really dig it, but that’s really all the questions I have. The last thing I ask is that I know that other people have to wait to get the album, but when am I going to get it?

Z: Haha, I’ll hook you up with a few tracks next time I see you.

C: Killer dude, sounds good. Thanks again for taking the time to chat tonight.

Z: No problem dude, we’ll be in touch about taking some pictures soon.

And thus ends the interview. I’ll go ahead and link on here to the new single “Blank Screens, Etc.”, both at iTunes and CD Baby (if you’re not an iTunes user). That being said, Thanks again to Zach for talking with me and I look forward to this new album!

Gallery Time! – UPDATE as of 1/19/12

img_7855

if BEARS were BEES

Preemptive TL;DR -
When: Saturday, January 21
What: Photo Gallery Opening with live music.
Where: Skylark Cafe & Club
Door Info: $5 cover/21+.
Time: Doors at 7, music at 9.
9pm: The Navins
10pm: The Fuzz
11pm: if BEARS were BEES
Facebook Event Link

Good news everybody! I have a gallery coming up with one other photographer at the Skylark Cafe & Club in West Seattle! Come down, hang out, get some drinks, listen to music, and maybe look at a few of the pictures hanging on the wall.

Since this is a Seattle Music Gallery, we wanted to get some of the bands that we’ve photographed to come play. My contribution is the fantastic T.J. Grant and his little music thing entitled if BEARS were BEES. There will also (hopefully) be two other bands playing this night as well and we’ll announce them when they get confirmed. Either that or we can make T.J. play for 4 hours. UPDATE: TJ will be performing at 11 and we have confirmed The Fuzz to play at 10. Confirmed The Navins at 9!

Right now there’s no real door time, so I’m saying 8 since the music starts at 9. UPDATE: The Gallery Opening officially starts at 7, so I will be there slightly before then.

Now comes the unfortunate part. We gotta pay the sound guy SOMEHOW, so there will be a cover charge. But a measly $5 doesn’t sound too bad to me.

And the other thing, this show is a 21+ show. The Skylark is all ages until the show, though. So if you’re underage and want to see pictures come down beforehand! I’ll be there!

That being said, the gallery runs until the end of February, so come down any time!

I look forward to seeing all of you there!

Top Albums of 2011

So I couldn’t think of 10. It was a stretch thinking of 8. I spent most of this year revisiting older stuff from the 90′s and early 00′s. It happens. But I did think of 8, so here they are!

8. Skrillex – “More Monsters and Sprites”
Dubstep, Drum & Bass
June 7, 2011

While I’m not a huge fan of dubstep in general, a former coworker of mine was adamant that I like it. Add in my friend Colton playing it all the time as well and I found I started to enjoy it. A lot of people get down on Skrillex because the former front man of the emo band From First to Last because he became so popular so quickly. But, as with a good deal of new music scenes (at least new in the US, dubstep has been in the UK for quite some time), the artists who rise quickly and become popular usually do because they’re just damn good at what they do. In particular on his 2011 release, Skrillex really impressed me with the song First of the Year (Equinox) which just starts the EP off with a bang. But unlike my post-rock albums on this list, the album doesn’t really flow. The majority of the 7 song compilation is made up of remixes of the first Skrillex song I ever heard – Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. It’s something that you get pieces of when you throw your iPod on shuffle and call it good, and we do need those types of albums.

7. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Featuring Karen O – “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack”
Soundtrack, Industrial
December 13, 2011

I love Trent Reznor, I love “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, then you throw in Atticus Ross (who previously worked with Reznor on “The Social Network” soundtrack) and a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” with Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeah’s) at vocals? You cannot go wrong. The album is dark, creepy, and disturbing, much like the partnering film. I enjoy listening to this one when I’m driving by myself late at night because it adds a bit of flair and makes me think that I can actually be a character in a movie.

6. Jeff Bridges – “Jeff Bridges”
Country
August 16, 2011

It feels a little strange saying that this is one of my favorite albums this year for two reasons. Firstly, because it’s a freaking country album, and I don’t listen to country music. Just ask the majority of my ex-girlfriends who many-a-time had their music turned off in my car in lieu of something that didn’t sing about sexy tractors or putting boots in the asses of gay foreigners. The last country album I really enjoyed before this one was Johnny Cash’s “American IV: The Man Comes Around”. Granted, I really have no concept of what would be considered a “good” Country album, as I don’t understand the popular Country genre at all. Secondly (oh yeah, I was making two points…), because it’s freaking Jeff Bridges! The Dude, Rooster Cogburn, Flynn. He has a fantastic voice that lends itself to country naturally, along with a great songwriting team (most of whom worked on the film “Crazy Heart” with him), and an extremely talented backing band. This album is just straight up enjoyable, much like the Willie Nelson albums of old (although not as good as Willie). I find myself singing along with it and really enjoying the old-school country feel. Some may disagree with me and to them I say well that’s just, like… your opinion, man.

5. Curse of the North – “Revelations”
Metal, Thrash Metal
June 10, 2011

So I may be slightly biased on this one because they’re my friends (I know, this excuse again), but that being said it’s a kickass album nonetheless. I wrote a review of it which you can view here along with my review of their release show. I won’t rehash what I said there too much, but I highly suggest giving them a listen.

4. Russian Circles – “Empros”
Post-Rock, Instrumental
October 25, 2011

I really dig this band, even photographed them once. This album just shows their growth as artists in their medium. When I picked up their debut “Enter” in 2006 I was immediately hooked. So when I heard they had a new album out I promptly headed over to iTunes and purchased it and boy, am I glad I did.  I suggest going and purchasing it now.

3. Explosions in the Sky – “Take Care, Take Care, Take Care”
Post-Rock, Instrumental
April 23, 2011

Saying I enjoy listening to Explosions is like saying I enjoy breathing. It just happens, and it is always tough to make it a long time without it. It’s been a while since the last release from these Texas natives, the last one being “All of A Sudden I Miss Everyone” (2007) which I managed to pick up on vinyl. I happened to get my hands on “Take Care” on my birthday when one of my friends gave me a leaked copy. I still bought it later out of principle, though. A fantastic thing about this album is we’re starting to get music videos, which are just an icing on the cake of the new album. This album is a great return for Explosions, but it will always be tough to beat “The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place” (2003). While there isn’t any song that truly stand out and take your breath away like Your Hand in Mine did, the album flows really well and is another album to add to your relaxation playlist.

 2. Fucked Up – “David Comes to Life”
Punk
June 7, 2011

Not gonna lie here, I hadn’t even heard of this band (much less considered them for a favorite) until about two weeks ago when I picked up my newest copy of SPIN Magazine with their top lists. Lo-and-behold, on the cover is this strange, bearded bald man who looks a hell of a lot like my buddy Boet. Needless to say I was a bit confused as to how Boet managed to get his face on my magazine (though knowing his pranks, I wouldn’t rule it out for him). But after reading a bit I decided to check out the band, especially since I find I tend to agree with SPIN in their strange punk/experimental rock tastes (like Titus Andronicus last year). Now this album starts off with about 30-40 seconds of a quiet lulling melody and then kicks off in to some old-school punk. If I had to describe the closest in sound, I’d say the Dropkick Murphys, but better. YEAHISAIDITWANNAFIGHTABOUTIT?! I’m sorry, that was the music. NOILIEDITWASME! But truly, this is a massive punk rock opera that just kicks your ass all the way through and you want to get back up and take it on again.

 1. And So I Watch You From Afar – “Gangs”
Post-Rock, Instrumental
April 29, 2011

There’s only one way to describe this Northern Irish Post-Rock Instrumental Band (other than that) and it was done so beautifully by Jeph Jacques, who (not so) coincidentally recommended the album to me via his Reddit AMA, that I thought I’d post it here. This is exactly what this album feels like:

“OH MY GOD WE WON THE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE LOTTERY AND WE’RE SPENDING THE LOTTERY MONEY ON A FUCKING ROCKET SHIP AND WE’RE GONNA GO CARVE A HUGE DICK ON THE MOON WITH A GIANT LASER WE PUT ON THE ROCKET SHIP AND ALL OF OUR PETS HAVE BECOME IMMORTAL AND WE JUST MADE OUT WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PERSON WE’VE EVER MET AND IT TURNS OUT THEIR MOM IS REALLY REALLY NICE TOO AND THIS COFFEE WE’RE DRINKING IS FUCKING DELICIOUS I THINK IT’S THAT STUFF THAT CIVET CATS POOP OUT AND IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY PARTY AND EVERYONE IS INVITED AND NOBODY WILL EVER BE MEAN TO ANYBODY ELSE EVER AGAIN is pretty much what this album sounds like.”

Also, if I ever have a band it’s going to be called And All of Our Pets Have Become Immortal. It would have to be a post-rock band, though. Nothing else would work.

Top 10 Television shows of 2011

So it has begun, the first of a few. I’ll also have my top 10 lists for albums and movies soon (I’m waiting to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so I can create an accurate top 10). But TV shows are easy! I’ve put together what is, for me anyway, the top 10 best and a couple of the worst television shows of this year. Your opinion might differ, but this is my opinion so this is it!

Top 10 Best Shows of 2011

10. Glee

Judge me all you want. I love this show. I’m a musicals fan and I dig most of the songs they pick. Although this years Christmas episode wasn’t nearly as good as last years (Seriously, Brittany was freaking adorable as a Cindy Lou Who character), I enjoyed it thoroughly. I also enjoy the fact that I haven’t heard “Don’t Stop Believing” in a long time. Seriously, I was getting sick of it.

9. Louie

This show is just fantastic. Louis C.K. is an amazing comedian and this show just goes to show you how you can do whatever you want on television (as long as you take a budget cut). Louie is thought provoking, hilarious, awkward, uncomfortable, and surreal all at the same time. Although it’s in its 2nd season, I will never forget a bit from one of the first episodes where a girl he’s on a blind date with literally runs and jumps in to a helicopter to escape him.

8. Archer

Once again, Archer appears to be one of the best written shows on television. For all the crude poop/penis humor in it, there’s just as much social commentary humor as well as some hilarious running gags. It’s because of this show that I now say “hooray…” whenever I get a task that I really don’t care to be doing. Season 3 has also started in 2011 and is hilarious so far.

7. Parks & Recreation

I  admit it, I was super late on the Parks and Rec bandwagon. I finally broke down and started watching it this year after being prodded by many of my friends. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first season, but the show has gotten aggressively more funny as it’s progressed. Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman) is one of the funniest characters ever created and his mythos grows with each episode. On top of that, Rob Lowe’s turn as Chris Traeger is *literally* one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. The only thing I don’t care for is that I tend to find Aziz Ansari a little annoying. He was funny to start out with, but I’m not a huge fan of what he is now. His character had a little growth last year, but so far this year has shown nothing.

6. Breaking Bad

Hey look! (STFU Navi). Another show I was late to the bandwagon on. AMC really did strike gold with this series. It’s hard to believe that Bryan Cranston can go from that dorky dad on Malcolm in the Middle to the brilliant Walter White and show such a huge range as an actor. I’ve rarely been more impressed with any other actor than with Cranston in this show. Absolutely fantastic.

5. Dexter

I know it’s basically the same formula, but with the religion aspect thrown in I find myself intrigued. It’s quite an interesting turn of things for this man who is so indoctrinated in the scientific world. Also, Mos Def is fantastic and I would have liked to have seen more of him. The only thing I have trouble with is seeing Edward James Olmos and not saying to myself “but General Adama! Nooooo!!!!”

4. How I Met Your Mother

Also known as “that show where NPH is awesome for half an hour every Monday.” Or so I’ve been told it’s called on the street. HIMYM is a show I’ve been following now for almost 4 years. It’s had its cheesy moments, its sullen moments, some outright hilarious moments, but this year is really getting back in to the thick of things. For anyone who saw the latest episode (2 weeks ago), it was truly one of the most heartbreaking and heartwarming episodes ever. I’m still a little upset about it, but in a good way. This season really reminds us why we care about these characters. Also, we should meet the mom soon, right?

3. Castle

What can I say? I still love this show. I still love Nathan Fillion (who doesn’t? I mean, c’mon). I still love the procedural cop show aspect of it. Not to mention that Stana Katic is really showing her range this season as an Actress. Nathan Fillion we already knew was good, but he’s on the verge of getting lapped by Katic. It’s totally worth Tuesdays being the hardest day of the week for me to get up for work so that I can stay up late Monday nights with Castle and Beckett. I suggest you do it, too.

2. Game of Thrones

Honestly, I hadn’t known what to expect. I’d never read George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice & Fire” series, nor did I know anything about it other than in the ramblings of some of my nerdy buddies. I’m now in the 3rd book (Storm of Swords) and it is fantastic. The show does such a great job of creating this world where magic has all but died, there are no dragons anymore, and power-hungry conspirators rule. I’ve also come to learn that this is the type of series where no character has that magical “live through anything” quality that most main characters have. Not to mention that Peter Dinklage gives the performance of a lifetime as Tyrion Lannister, “The Imp”, and gets the chance to be one of the greatest characters ever written.

1. Doctor Who

Hello, Sweetie! Man, was I amiss leaving this show off my list last year. I don’t know how or why that happened, as I’ve been watching it religiously since the reboot in 2005 (and have subsequently gotten my hands on as many of the classic episodes as I can). In his second year as the Doctor, Matt Smith is quickly becoming my favorite incarnation. I started with Christopher Eccleston, was upset when he transitioned to David Tennant and then subsequently loved Tennant. But what I think is really helping Matt Smith with his run at it is that Stephen Moffat has taken over as head writer. I come to find out that some of my favorite episodes from Tennant (“Blink” for example) were written by Moffat. Not to mention the companions in Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) are fantastic as well. Also, let’s not forget the lovely Alex Smith as the incorrigible Dr. River Song. Though I have to say that my favorite episodes from the past two seasons are the ones that include Craig (James Corden) in the episodes “The Lodger” and “Closing Time.” All hail Stormageddon! Dark Lord of All!

Worst Shows of 2011 (in no particular order)

The Office

I know some will disagree, but I’ve just been really disappointed with this year. It feels like in the wake of Steve Carrell leaving that they’ve been trying too hard to keep it funny and it’s floundering.

The Cape

Just… just awful… Canceled soon after its release, this wannabe “Heroes” + “Batman” flopped in the first 10 minutes for me. I tried to enjoy it, I really did, but it was just SO BAD. And it doesn’t even have the common courtesy to be bad enough for me to enjoy it later! Just… BLAH!

…I hate this show.

New Girl

Let me just state this off the bat, I really don’t like Zooey Daschenal. I found her charming in “Elf” way back in the day, but that was pretty much the end of it. Since then she’s been singing in underwear commercials and acting goofy on screen (unintentionally in “The Happening”) to the delight of millions! Every time I just get more irritated. Not to mention that if you look at those big blue eyes of hers, there’s nothing behind them. No thought capacity. It drives me insane. On top of that, they got rid of the one helpful factor of the show in the character of Coach – who is one of the Wayans kids. He was hilarious and he was only in the pilot. They replaced him with a not-as-funny stereotypical black guy. The show is awkward, cheesy, and has weird tense moments that are supposed to be funny but aren’t. Even Justin Long showing up can’t save this show for me.

Mr. Sunshine

This short-lived show deserved to be canceled. I almost feel sorry for Chandler… erm… Matthew Perry at this point. Just sad…
